FLOW REGULATORS

A flow regulator has two graduated scales: the first one (from 5 to 250 ml/hr), with blue numbers on a white background, must be used for solutions with a viscosity ≥ 10% (solution with a base of NaCl 9%, or  Glucose 5% and 10%, or Mannitol 5% and 10%); the second one (from 5 to 200 ml/hr), with white numbers on a blue background, must be used for solutions with a viscosity of 10-40%.

As it can be seen on a regulator, the number 20 of the first scale has not the same value of the same number on the other scale. This is because the viscosity of the solution to be administrated to the patient is an important parameter to be consider during the calculation of the solution quantity. The regulators can’t be used for the administration of blood or blood components.

Solutions with high viscosity can cause a lower flow than the one indicated on the scale. Compensation for this problem can be achieved by increasing the height between the container of the solution and the patient. The use of a15 micron filter into the drip chamber is suggested, in order to prevent crystals from blocking the fluid path inside the regulator. Drop counting is always necessary to confirm proper flow rate. If necessary, the height of the I.V. solution containercan be adjusted to increase or decrease the flow rate.


EXAMPLE:

 

Drip chamber 20 drops/ml
200 ml/h = 66 drops per minute
100 ml/h = 33 drops per minute
50 ml/h = 16 drops per minute

 


The main used item is the extension line composed by:
  • A female Luer Lock for standard connection to the male Luer Lock of infusion sets
  • A Y connector with injection site for unexpected infusions
  • A male Luer Lock for standard connection to the intravenous catheter
The other two main items are the infusion sets. They are different only for the drip chamber and so for the dropper:
  • If the drip chamber has a dropper of 20 drops/ml, then the infusion set is called “Macrodrip”
  • If the drip chamber has a dropper of 60 drops/ml, then the infusion set is called “Microdrip”
These three main items could be manufactured in these variants:
  • Flow regulators with single scale
  • Flow regulators with double scale for solutions with higher viscosity
  • Flow regulators with amber coloured components for the administration of photosensitive drugs
  • Flow regulators with PVC-FREE components for the administration of chemotherapy drugs
  • Flow regulators with in-line absolute filters for the administration of Taxani
  • Flow regulators with swabable needle-less valves for the administration in closed system
  • Flow regulators with stopcocks or manifolds for connection of side lines

GRADUATED BURETTE

A burette is a cylindrical container with a capacity of 100 or 150 ml, with a printed graduated scale. It is used to prepare cocktails of drugs and physiological liquid (burette set for infusion) or to mix drugs and blood/plasma (burette set for transfusion). It can be used for enteral or parenteral feeding as well, especially in pediatric ward.

Our burette set is composed by:

  • A spike fixed on the entrance tube, to link to bags or bottles;
  • A cylindrical container with a floating valve inside it, that has the function of indicating the solution's level and of stopping the drug flow to the patient when it reaches the bottom (zero level);
  • Two covers:
    1. the upper one, together with the hole for the insertion of the tube, has an antibacterial air filter that allows the outlet of air. It also has an injection site for unexpected infusions;
    2. the lower one has a central hole for the outflow of the drugs and it can be linked to :
      - a micro or macro drip chamber with solution filter (burette set for infusion)
      - a drip chamber with blood filter (burette set for transfusion)
      - a macrodrip chamber without solution filter (burette set for parenteral infusion)
      - a tube with inner Ø 4,3 or 4,8, with a snap off membrane (burette set for enteral feeding)

In burette sets for infusion or transfusion there are a roller, an injection site and a Luer or Luer Lock connector to link to the patient as in standard infusion sets.
